Assistant Buyer

Location Luton, Bedfordshire

Reports To: Senior Buying Manager

Primary Responsibilities:

Supplier Management

  • Day to day commercial management of the supplier base.
  • Supplier contract / terms negotiations (price, lead time, moq, payment terms, delivery terms, returns arrangements, rebate arrangements, etc.)
  • Supporting the inventory control team with resolution of all supply chain issues
  • Working with colleagues in the inventory control and technical teams to put in place necessary action plans to ensure KPI’s are met.
  • Working closely with the technical team in resolving product quality issues and achieving acceptable commercial resolution.
  • Supporting the commercial teams with new business tenders and promotional activities

 Project Management

  • Project management of new product introductions and resourcing activities, defining the critical path, working closely with colleagues in the marketing, technical and inventory control teams to ensure key milestones and deliverables are met.
  • Reporting progress to the business of all project activities and contributing to the decision-making process at project review meetings.

 General Maintenance

  • Maintenance of a raw material, exchange rate and freight rate tracker and reporting their impact on profitability to the business
  • Validation of cost price movements by reference to changes in market indices, tracking these and reporting their impact on profitability to the business
  • Preparation of landed cost templates as required to support commercial pricing decisions
  • Maintenance of supplier master file to include supplier details, terms, annual spend (prior year and forecast) by region and product category and ensure this aligns with internal systems
  • Preparation for supplier meetings, trade shows and business trips, communicating actions as agreed and managing these through to completion

  • Educated to Degree Level in a relevant business discipline (e.g. Logistics, Procurement, Supply Chain, Business Studies, Management, Finance)
  • Ability to work effectively in high pressure and deadline driven situations
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and a thorough and accurate approach to work
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in both a team environment and on own
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills
  • Resourceful and lateral thinking with a proactive approach to tasks
  • Excellent communication, presentation and organisation skills
  • Computer literate with strong Excel skills (pivot tables, vlookup etc)
  • Drive, ambition, and enthusiasm to deliver results and progress within the organisation


  • Member of CIPs or Institute of Logistics and Transport
  • Experience of working with third party Far East suppliers
  • ERP System experience
