Product Engineer - Lighting



Reports To: Senior Buying Manager

The Company

The company is a well-established, thriving manufacturer and distributor of electrical products, including wiring accessories, LED lighting, safety alarms and cable, incorporating the deta, Brackenheath Briticent and SMJ Electrical brands, as well as Channel Safety Systems. DETAs products are specified by many Housing Developers and are distributed through electrical wholesalers as well as retailers. 

DETA currently has a turnover in excess of £60m in the UK and enjoy a strong position in their market place. 

Job Scope

The successful candidate will be required to meet the following functions and responsibilities: 

  • Develop electrical products in liaison with manufacturing partners, usually by establish product specification, writing product briefs, determining applicable standards and assessing samples 
  • Test and/or manage testing of products in developing products and investigating product problems 
  • Establish product labelling/marking requirements including packaging labels as necessary, create product instruction leaflets and data sheets 
  • Liaising with the Quality Team to investigate product problems, report findings and manage product improvements with the factory 
  • Ensure products comply with their various Directives, Regulations and standards in accordance with the companies obligations, e.g. safety, emc and RoHS 
  • Produce Technical literature, including Product Specifications, providing traceability from the manufacturing partners information to Deta’s, create product instruction leaflets and data sheets 
  • Ensure product information is kept up to date, including WEEE and packaging weight data 

Skills Required

  • Educated in an Engineering discipline with an electrical or electronic bias 
  • Have knowledge of manufacturing processes, product standards and taking a quality approach to problem solving 
  • Able to identify product features and benefits 
  • Knowledge of electrical product application and electrical installation, including work practices on building sites 
  • Ideally, knowledge of British/European Standards and legislation that affect products within DETA’s product portfolio 
  • Experience in working with off-shore factories remotely 
  • Ideally, knowledge of IET Wiring Regulations 
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
